January 10, 2011 Thai Farm Cooking School

Spent the day at cooking school learning 5 Thai dishes.  They picked us up at our hotel, stopped to give us a market tour, drove us out to a farm, gave us a tour of their garden then put us to work in the kitchen.  It was fast paced and lots of fun.  We made red curry paste and then made chicken curry, basil chicken, coconut milk chicken soup and rice all for lunch.  After lunch we made bananas in coconut milk (as easy as it sounds) and pad thai.  Was way too full to eat either of them, though.  I asked our teacher what the difference is between tom yum soup and tom kha soup since I usually prefer tom kha.  Turns out the difference is tom kha has chicken blood in it.  I'm a bit grossed out knowing that now.

We met an Australian couple on their way home from a few years abroad doing everything from picking fruit in Europe to sheep farming in Nova Scotia.  We hooked up with them in the evening and got some great travel tips on what to do in Laos.  Now I'm psyched to get there.

  1. Good shot of the blood. The lady packaging it up was surprisingly efficient and not messy. Cracks me up that your tongue knows what you want better than your brain does.
