February 12, 2011 Don Khon, Laos

From Don Khong took a 1 hour trip to Don Khon, a smaller island even further south. I love the Mekong.

It took us a lot of walking and a run-in with a jerky German dude to find a place to stay. One could call the accommodation rustic.  We got a room (4 walls, bed, light bulb, fan and mosquito netting) for $5/night at Nok Noy.  Bathroom was shared and in a different structure.  It was actually a nice place to stay.  They had a kitten, a dog with a horrible skin condition and an amazingly beautiful rooster that was quite proud of himself.

Rented bikes in the afternoon, rode to the dock, rented a boat to see the Irrawaddy dolphins.  The dolphins were off in the distance, but we did see them and it was incredible.  So cool to be so close to such rare animals.  They're so weird looking that I'm cool with the idea of them and not actually seeing them close-up.
