February 14, 2011 Cambodia crossing

No post for Feb. 13 since I really did not a damn thing.  We had no money left and didn't want to exchange any more since we were leaving the following day so we just sat around reading, went for a little walk.  I forgot to take a photo of me doing nothing.

Feb. 14 we left in the morning for Cambodia.  We took up the offer of a guy to take our passport through Customs for only a dollar.  Nearly everyone on the bus took him up on it.  Who wants to stand in the heat for the shake-down of the additional $8 on top of the official cost of the visa?

Cambodia looked immediately like what I thought it would, which made me a bit sad, to be honest.

Got to Phnom Pehn in the evening.  A nice tuk-tuk driver took us to a no-fee ATM (Canadia Bank) then drove us around to find a place to stay.  Wound up at the Angkor Hotel International on the 4th floor, a window that opens into the hallway, wi-fi in the lobby, 24-hour room service, cable TV, hot shower all for $10/night. Air con costs an additional $5.  Cambodia uses the US dollar, which is what the ATMs dispense. Any change less than a dollar is handled in their currency.  Very strange, but it makes figuring out the cost of things a non-issue.

  1. Ecuador is like that too: uses US paper money and Ecuadorian coins. Love that last photo! :o)
